Is Alex from A Clockwork Orange rebelling against restrictions in his society or merely a villainous rogue?

Kubrick adapted the film to show the disastrous consequences that human free will can have but is Alex fighting against the unyielding authoritarians that are oppressing young people. Or, he is just gratifying is own sick, personal needs?
