Is it possible to speak with a prosecutor before ones hearing?

Is it possible to speak with a prosecutor before ones hearing? Would I be able to work something out with the prosecutor without representation from an attorney? Also if I attempts to speak with a prosecutor before my hearing and if I don't like the deal made or refuses to accept the deal offered by the prosecutor do I lose my right to ask for a continuance in order to attain a lawyer before the judge?
