Why did Kirk Gibson deny an All-Star game invitation, twice!?

he probably wanted to use the all-star break to rest up, and make sure he's in as good condition as possible. that was back when the all-star game meant nothing. now the winning league gets home field in game 7 (i think) for the world series.
